Structure of the HIV

Updated: Jun 5

HIV viruses have single stranded RNA genome and associated with it two molecules of reverse transcriptase. Other proteins associated with the core of the virus include the p10 protease and p32 integrase help in entering the cell. Surrounding the viral genome and the nucleoid proteins are layers of core proteins p17 and p24. The viral core called as nucleocapsid is surrounded by an envelope derived from host cell membrane. HIV envelope is studded with human proteins including class I and Class II MHC molecules acquired by the virus as it buds off from the human cell membrane.
